When John Herman needed a new primary care provider, he sought out Patina for its personalized approach to patient care. Keep reading to learn more about John's experience with Patina.
John Herman has spent a lifetime helping others succeed — whether in business, education or advocacy. A Philadelphia native and lifelong mentor, John relocated to the Charlotte area in 1990 for an opportunity in the property management field. Today, he lives in the Sun City Carolina Lakes community in Fort Mill, South Carolina with his wife of 54 years, Helen.
A father, grandfather, animal lover and passionate teacher, John thrives on staying active — mentally and physically. His days are filled with music from his baby grand piano, travel, volunteering with charities, building dollhouses, and enjoying life with his family (including his “grand-dog” Dempsey). Though he’s had mild atrial fibrillation and high blood pressure for years, both are well managed — and his focus now is on maintaining good health with care that’s compassionate, transparent and patient-centered.

“Being comfortable with your team and knowing that there is excellent medical backup when needed is a great feeling,” he said. “It’s also a great stress reducer.”
“I really enjoyed my visit with John at his home,” said Brooke Randall, RN and member of his dedicated care team. “I have the flexibility in my schedule to take my time and talk about what matters most to him. After the visit, John showed me his beautiful doll houses and we chatted about how he builds them. It’s great to see this side of patients and what brings them joy in life.”

From the very first interaction, John knew Patina was different. “The person who helped me get started as a new patient was knowledgeable, helpful, and even stayed on the line with me while I called my insurance carrier,” he said. “It’s rare to see someone go the extra mile.”
That level of support continues today — and it’s what keeps John feeling confident and cared for. When a health concern arises or treatment solutions are needed, John knows that his Patina care team will provide immediate feedback and recommendations in a timely fashion.
That’s a stark contrast to previous experiences, where he often felt pressured into unnecessary tests and procedures before more common first-step solutions were even discussed.
When John was experiencing side effects from a medication ordered earlier this year by another provider, he called Patina.
“John first spoke with one of our registered nurses and had a virtual appointment with me later that day from the convenience of his home,” said Jamie Sikora, a nurse practitioner on John’s Patina care team. “We discussed possible options to mitigate complications, and we also reviewed some lifestyle modifications in order to prevent additional side effects.”
John was able to continue taking his medications – and he didn’t need to wait days for a call-back or months to get an appointment. “We resolved things pretty quickly and easily,” continued Jamie. “I love that Patina enables same-day appointments for our patients so that they get fast, high-quality care.”

“Helping patients like John meet their healthcare goals is incredibly rewarding,” said Jamie. “He’s very involved and proactive, and he’s very vocal about his needs and expectations. People don’t realize it, but it helps me provide better care if we have open conversations and a trusting relationship. It’s important to tailor care plans to what patients want, and to really listen to them and respect them. I have the best job, and I’m proud to truly know and care for John and all my patients.”
